Hurricane Electric and House Rabbit Society Save Easter Bunnies

Fremont, CA - April 8, 2004 - Easter is just around the corner, the classic Easter candy commercials are running, children are lined up to see the Easter Bunny, and Hurricane Electric, a Technical Service Provider, and the House Rabbit Society are teaming up for the forth year in a row to save rabbits from being abandoned after Easter Sunday fades away.

Every Easter, the House Rabbit Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned rabbits, works to educate consumers on the impact of purchasing a bunny as an Easter gift. The messages they strive to communicate are "Rabbits and Easter Don't Mix" and "Easter Gifts Result in Summertime Orphans." The Society receives numerous calls every summer from parents who are tired of the "Easter gifts" they purchased just a few months earlier for their children. Rabbits end up abandoned at shelters, "set free," or neglected in backyard hutches.

"Contrary to Easter-time hype, rabbits are not "low-maintenance" pets, and need an adult caretaker. Rabbits require the same long-term commitment as dogs and cats," explains Paige Parsons House Rabbit Society spokeswoman. "Companion rabbits can live 10 years or more; your child may be on his or her way to college by the time your rabbit is a senior citizen."

Much of the Society's educational campaign is carried out online at its website, www.rabbit.org, with web hosting donated by Hurricane Electric. The website enables House Rabbit Society to have a worldwide impact on rabbit education and rescue. It is known as the most complete and comprehensive repository for house rabbit information on the Internet. Rabbit.org has given the House Rabbit Society the international exposure needed to recruit volunteers across the world. In the past 18 months alone, the House Rabbit Society has added volunteers in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, and Australia, according to Parsons.

"Charitable hosting has been critical to our online success. We've been able to focus our efforts on adding critical online content and tools that leverage our volunteers. Our site currently receives over 100,000 page views a day, and traffic continues to grow exponentially. Hurricane Electric makes sure our site has the capacity to deal with huge spikes in traffic while we at House Rabbit Society can continue to focus on rabbit rescue and education," explains Parsons.
